A cavesson is a popular and used aid for both young horse training and daily horse training. What you should look out for when buying a cavesson for your horse, what different Cavessons In this article you will find out what Picadera has in its range and why you should use a cavesson for training your horse.

This is important when buying a cavesson

Cavessons come in many different designs. Some differ not only in their appearance but also in their function.

It is especially important that the cavesson fits your horse properly and sits well during training and does not slip even during one or two joyful jumps. On the topic Adjust the cavesson correctly we have also written a suitable blog post for you.

The level of training of your horse should also be taken into account when choosing the right cavesson. With a cavesson with a nosepiece, you can influence your horse and explain aids much more precisely and finely than is the case with a cavesson without a nosepiece. For sensitive horses, a leather cavesson with a padded leather noseband without a nosepiece is suitable. Cavecons with a link chain are real all-rounders with precise influence that adapt to almost every horse's nose. Cavecons are particularly suitable for ground and hand work. When lunging, the cavecon should be well adjusted to the horse's head, as it slips more quickly than a cavesson with a fixed nosepiece.

Combine cavesson with bit, lunge and reins

Most cavessons have a middle and two outer rings. The middle, pivoting ring allows Lunges & Ropes buckled. The lunge line then acts directly on the bridge of your horse's nose. The big advantage of buckling the lunge line over the middle ring is that the lunge line rotates when you change hands and does not have to be awkwardly buckled.

If your cavesson has two additional outer rings, you can use these to Reins for bitless riding or for use when working with a double lunge or long reins.

Some cavessons, like our multifunctional leather cavesson Oslo, have additional rings on the cheek pieces to allow a bit to be flexibly buckled in using bit straps.

If your cavesson does not have this function, a bit can also be easily combined with an additional semi-bridle. This is then simply buckled over the cavesson together with the bit. This means that the bit can be flexibly integrated into the training session with your horse, as the semi-bridle can be easily removed again. The combination of cavesson with semi-bridle is very common in Spain, as the serreta is traditionally used for riding here.

Handwork and lunging with cavesson

Unlike lunging with a bridle and bit or a stable halter, when lunging with a cavesson the pull of the lunge acts directly on the middle ring of the horse's nose and neck. As a result, you can use the cavesson to influence your horse's back from nose to tail, thereby achieving a longitudinal bend. Your horse is positioned without the need for auxiliary reins or side reins that force and frame it into a certain position. This way your horse learns to balance and carry itself.

Ideal companion for horse training

With the help of a cavesson, your horse can not only be lunged, but also worked in hand and ridden bitless. Even lessons from the High School can be learned in hand during further training with the cavesson. A cavesson is therefore a versatile tool for all areas of your horse's work and training. In addition to choosing the right model for you and your horse, the fit and correct buckle fastening are also crucial.

Myriam Scotti
Myriam Scotti

Hello, I'm Myriam and I take care of customer service and shipping at Picadera. I'm also currently doing further training in marketing.
Since horses have always played a big role in my family, I was able to gain a lot of experience at a young age. The two English thoroughbreds Antarro and Belle Indomita have been part of the family for some time now.
In addition, my riding partner Lukas, a German riding pony, has been my faithful companion for many years. He is a pretty good teacher who has taught me a lot and helped me improve my riding skills. Since Lukas has now reached retirement age, we spend most of our time on beautiful rides in the countryside and free work from the ground.
