Kimblewick & Pelham
Kimblewick & Pelham
The Kimblewick is a sub-type of the Pelham. Both bits have a leverage effect.
The jumping curb bit – the Kimblewick
The Kimblewick is often referred to as a jumping curb bit or baby curb bit. It has D-shaped bit rings, which usually even have individual recesses for attaching the reins in the desired position - top and bottom. If the reins are attached in the upper recess, the jumping curb bit works like a normal broken bit or like a Baucher bar, depending on the type of mouthpiece. If the reins are hooked into the lower opening, a small lever effect is created that works like a curb bit. Of course, you can also simply hook the reins into the D-rings to achieve a flexible effect. If the horse holds its head too low, the reins slide upwards and the Kimblewick works without any leverage. If the horse holds its head too high, the reins slide downwards and the curb effect sets in.
At Picadera you can get the Kimblewick with a single-jointed mouthpiece or as a stick. The Kimblewick VAQUERO bar also offers the advantage of being able to attach two reins. It is available with flat Spanish-style side parts in stainless steel. It is available in a version with little tongue clearance or as a Mullen Mouth version. Here the bit sits evenly on the tongue and thus offers a pleasant feeling even for horses with fleshier tongues.
The effect of the Pelham
The Pelham is ridden with four reins in the Iberian riding style. It has a milder effect than a more classic curb bit. Because of this, it is also a transitional bit and suitable for horses that need to get used to the curb bit or for riders who want to familiarize themselves with the leverage effect. This also applies to the jumping curb bit.
The Pelham VAQUERO is made of burnished iron and stimulates the horse's salivation due to its noble rust formation with the natural oxidation processes. The Pelham is available as a bar with little tongue clearance, but also as a Mullen Mouth for horses with thicker tongues. It has flat sides in the Spanish style. For horses with sensitive corners of the mouth there are the bit discs from Picadera.
