Portuguese Curb Bits
Portuguese Baroque curbs
The Portuguese curb bit has the same effect as a classic curb bit. They are less elaborately decorated and do not have curved S-shaped bars as is known from the Spanish curb bits.
Effect of the Portuguese curb bit
When the reins are pulled, a lever effect is created that works from the tongue, over the jaw and the cheek pieces of the bridle onto the poll. The interaction of the curb bits with a hooked chin chain also puts pressure on the jawbone. When hooking the chin chain onto the existing chin hook of the bit, make sure that the chain is untwisted.
The Portuguese curbs at Picadera also have a slight vertical play. By rocking the mouthpiece up and down on the curb trees, the horse's chewing activity is encouraged. The jaw can be loosened more easily and the horse's mouth does not tense up. This has a positive effect on the entire musculoskeletal system.

One advantage of the BALAO pump bit is that it can be ridden bareback or with two pairs of reins. This does not require a snaffle bit, which is particularly practical for horses with a short mouth. Despite this, the Portuguese bit can also be used with a snaffle bit, as the particularly thin mouthpiece does not take up as much space in the horse's mouth. The Portuguese BALAO bit is traditionally available in gold and silver colored brass.
