Spurs & Spur Straps

Spurs and spur straps

Spurs are a common riding aid, especially for carrying out exercises that require a lot of sensitivity with precision. Correct execution of the exercises is particularly important in working equitation and in the dressage arena. Here, targeted impulses are important. If done correctly, working with spurs can also help the horse to respond better to the aids, as a smaller area is touched. An example from working equitation is the slalom, which must be mastered with flying canter changes in the WM and WS performance classes. The sidepass, running sideways over a pole, can also be performed more precisely with spurs.

There are many different types of spurs. Spike spurs are usually flattened at the end of the spike. Ball spurs have a small ball at the end, which may also be rotated depending on the design. Wheel spurs are equipped with a small wheel. These spurs can roll along the horse's belly. There are types of spurs that are attached with a spur strap, others are simply attached to the shoe or boot.

Assortment at Picadera

Picadera offers the VAQUERA spurs with a wheel or ball made of stainless steel and burnished iron. There are also plug-in spurs with a ball and wheel in the Portuguese style made of stainless steel. The spurs are worn directly over the heel. To really add the finishing touch to the VAQUERA spurs, there are the VAQUERA and VAQUERO spur straps in light brown, brown and black cowhide. The models all have a buckle made of burnished iron.

To counteract the natural oxidation process of iron, it is recommended to occasionally rub the material with a cloth soaked in olive oil.
