High-quality Pelham with side parts made of stainless steel in the English style and an optimized Mullen Mouth mouthpiece with pump function made of sweet iron. The vertical play of the mouthpiece encourages the horse to chew. This makes it easier to loosen the jaw, poll and thus the entire horse's back. The optimized and anatomically shaped Mullen Mouth bar mouthpiece is well received by many horses because it lies very evenly on the tongue and is cushioned by it. Horses with very thick and fleshy tongues in particular benefit from the mouthpiece that is curved along its entire length. For horses with sensitive corners of the mouth, we recommend the use of bit discs due to the movable connection between the side part and mouthpiece.

Effect & use of the bit

Compared to the classic Pelham with fixed sides, the Pelham with pump function takes a little longer to take effect: when you take the reins, the mouthpiece first slides upwards before the effect on the mouth, lower jaw and poll sets in. The pump function allows the horse to move the mouthpiece up and down rhythmically. This helps horses with a tight mouth and horses with very little mouth activity to relax their jaws better. This also loosens the poll and ultimately the horse's entire body more easily.

Through natural oxidation processes and the formation of rust, the burnished iron of the mouthpiece stimulates saliva production.

For precise aids, we recommend using only two pairs of reins. This allows you to differentiate between bar and leverage effects when riding, in contrast to using Pelham straps.

The right size for the Pelham

Under "Size Guide" (see above) you will find the actual dimensions of the mouthpiece. Please note that the sides of the Pelham should fit tightly to the corners of your horse's mouth. If your horse is between two sizes, we recommend that you choose the smaller size for this model.

Care instructions for burnished iron

Rust will form on traditional, burnished products or product components after some time. This is due to natural oxidation processes and is not a quality defect, but an essential and intended characteristic of this material. To maintain the dark color, it is recommended to occasionally rub the affected parts with a cloth soaked in olive oil.
