Portuguese style curb bit made from Sweet Iron

Classic curb bit, as is often used in Portugal. The light, vertical movement of the mouthpiece encourages the horse to chew. This makes it easier to loosen the jaw, poll and thus the entire horse's back. The optimized and anatomically shaped Mullen Mouth bar mouthpiece is well received by many horses because it sits very evenly on the tongue and is cushioned by it. The burnished iron stimulates saliva production through natural oxidation processes and the formation of rust. For horses with sensitive corners of the mouth, we recommend the use of bit discs due to the movable connection between the side part and the mouthpiece.

Effect & Use of the Portuguese Curb Bit

The Portuguese curb bit has a less direct effect due to its movable side parts compared to curb bits with a firmly welded mouthpiece. This allows the horse to play more with the mouthpiece and rein aids are less direct. The light pump function allows the horse to move the mouthpiece up and down rhythmically. This helps horses with a tight mouth and horses with very little mouth activity to relax their jaws better. This also loosens the neck and ultimately the horse's entire body more easily.

The Portuguese curb bit can be used bare with one or two pairs of reins. Using two pairs of reins offers a wonderful alternative to the curb bit/snaffle bit combination for horses with a short mouth and little space in the mouth.

The right size for the curb bit

You can find the actual dimensions of the mouthpiece under "Size Guide" (see above). If you are unsure, we recommend that you compare the actual dimensions of your existing bit with those of the Portuguese curb bit to find the right size. Please note that the side parts should fit tightly to the corners of your horse's mouth. If your horse is undecided between two sizes, we recommend that you choose the larger size for this model.

Care instructions for burnished iron

Rust will form on traditional, burnished products or product components after some time. This is due to natural oxidation processes and is not a quality defect, but an essential and intended characteristic of this material. To maintain the dark color, it is recommended to occasionally rub the affected parts with a cloth soaked in olive oil.
