spurs & spur straps

Spurs and Spur Straps

Spurs are a common aid for precise execution of exercises that require a lot of sensitivity. Especially in the Working Equitation and in the dressage arena, the correct execution of the exercises is important. Here, selective impulses are important. Working with the spurs can also help the horse to react better to the aids, because a smaller area is touched. An example from the Working Equitation is the slalom, which has to be mastered with flying canter changes in the WM and WS performance classes. Also the sidepass, the sideways-across-a-pole, can be executed more precisely with spurs.

Spurs come in many different varieties. Flat end spurs are usually flattened at the end of the thorn. Rounded end spurs have a small ball at the end, depending on the design also rotated. Rowel spurs are equipped with a small wheel. These spurs can roll on the horse's belly. There are types of spurs that are fastened with a spur straps , others you simply put on your shoe or boot.
