Braid and knot the tail nicely

Do you want to make your horse look prettier for an event, such as a Working Equitation tournament or a Baroque show? The best way to do this is, of course, with a chic hairstyle. We have already shown you the pretty tail knot Nudo Vaquero shown. In this blog post we would like to show you the tail knot with braided variant.

Preparing the tail knot

In principle, there is no major preparation required, but you should still follow a few basic rules to ensure that the knot lasts a long time.

  1. The tail does not necessarily have to be freshly washed. The shampoo causes the hair to lose its grip and increases the chance that individual strands in the tail knot will slip out.
  2. The same applies to mane spray. Mane spray is also part of many people's mane and tail routine. The combination of water and oil that is present in most sprays creates a slippery layer around the hair, which in turn is bad for our knot.
  3. You can brush the tail thoroughly beforehand, then braiding will be easier because the hair will then be finer and untangled.

To make the knot even more durable, you can spray the tail well beforehand using a spray bottle filled with water. For the tail knot itself, you don't need any other tools other than a few mane elastics.

Braiding the tail – two variants

There are two ways to braid the tail. First, there is the normal French braid, where the two outer strands of the three are always alternately above the middle strand. At the same time, a new strand of hair is added with each outer strand to create the typical braided pattern.

The second variant uses the same basic principle of the three strands, but the outer strands are not placed over, but under the middle strand. If you continue braiding this variant, the braid will have a "put-on" look, as the braid pattern sits on the strands of hair. This is why the second variant can also be called a "put-on French braid".

No matter which variant you choose, the braid is braided approximately to the end of the tail and secured with a mane elastic.

After you have finished braiding the braid and secured it with a mane elastic, divide the rest of the tail into two strands. One strand remains in the background, so to speak, while a slightly thicker main strand is separated in front of it. When you have separated both strands, start to twist the front strand to the right. While twisting, start to pull the strand of hair upwards to wrap around the braided tail. Repeat this until the tail is almost finished. When you have done that, hold the twisted strand firmly.

Now take the second strand in your other, still free hand. Twist this in the opposite direction and, just like with the first strand, slowly go up around the base of the tail while twisting. Once you've done that, twist the two ends of the strands together and then secure them like a small bun using a mane elastic. And the braided tail knot is ready.

This makes the tail knot last longer

To make the tail knot even more durable, you can spray it with a little water at the end to make it stronger. You can also attach additional mane elastics around the knot to give the knot even more hold.

Tip: Remember to only leave the tail knot braided for as long as necessary. The braiding and wrapping of the hair strands puts a certain amount of pressure on the base of the tail. Therefore, you should only leave the tail knot on your horse for a short time, for example for an event, a tournament or a photo shoot. It also makes it harder to scare away flies in the summer.

Quick and easy to make pretty

The more often you do the braided tail knot, the faster you will be able to tie it over time. Now you and your horse are ready for beautiful moments with the stylish braided tail knot.
